Our April 2024 Leadership Summit will be held April 22-26, 2024, at the Hilton Niagara Falls Hotel & Suites (6361 Fallsview Boulevard, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 3V9.)
Three programs will be available to members as part of the accreditation for the Queen’s University IRC Labour Relations Foundations certificate and are intended to build Bargaining Unit Presidents’ and executive team members’ knowledge base. Members who have completed one or both of the previous Queen’s Leadership development courses, are encouraged to apply. Leaders will gain knowledge in one of the following core competency areas:
Program One - Building Emotional Intelligence and Trust
- Understand what Emotional Intelligence (EI) is, and recognize how it impacts the workplace.
- Identify their current level of emotional intelligence and understand their trust-growth opportunities, including their role to increase team performance and commitment.
- Raise awareness of different communication styles to manage feedback and difficult conversations.
- Use emotional intelligence to better handle conflict in the workplace.
- Explore levels of trust from individual, team and organizational perspectives.
Program Two - Strategic Grievance Handling
- Diagnose when and how conflict escalates.
- Understand the context, purpose and details of a grievance.
- Consider their options both before and when a grievance is filed.
- Prepare for and take control of the grievance meeting.
- Deploy your skills more effectively during the grievance process.
- Strategically consider options for resolution such as mediation, arbitration or med-arb.
Program Three - Labour Arbitration Foundations
- The participants will learn about the steps in the labour arbitration process and evidence-gathering to ensure they are able to help prepare the best case for ONA counsel, including effective preparation for the hearing.
This Leadership Summit is limited to a maximum of 100 registrants in the following split:
- Program One – 30 members
- Program Two – 35 members
- Program Three – 35 members
It is important for Local Executive teams to consider their Local/Bargaining Unit’s learning needs and which of their leaders will be motivated and engaged by this kind of educational opportunity.
The deadline for submitting your Expression of Interest (EOI) Form is January 26, 2024 @ 12 p.m. ET. Receipt of EOI Form will be acknowledged by email and a follow up with the Local Coordinator will be done to confirm support for your application. All candidates (and their Local Coordinators) will be notified, by email, of the status of their application no later than February 9, 2024. The following deadlines should be noted:
- Expression of Interest deadline 12 p.m. January 26, 2024
- Position acceptance: 4 p.m. February 29, 2024
- Registration deadline: 4 p.m. March 18, 2024
- Room reservation deadline: 4 p.m. March 18, 2024
Each member accepted into the April 2024 Leadership Summit will be funded provincially for meals and accommodation from noon on Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26 at 11:30 a.m. Salary and travel will be the responsibility of the local. Transportation from Pearson to the venue and return will be by shuttle bus and can be requested through the registration process. Attendees will be expected to complete and submit expense forms upon conclusion of the event.

The Ontario Nurses’ Association is pleased to be accepting applications for attendance at our 2023 Leadership Summit, which will be held September 18-22, 2023, at the Oakwood Resort (70671 Bluewater Highway, Grand Bend, ON. N0M 1T0.)
It is important for Local Executive teams to consider their Local/Bargaining Unit’s learning needs and which of their leaders will be motivated and engaged by this kind of educational opportunity.
The deadline to submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) Form for the Novice or Advanced Stream is June 16, 2023 @ 12 p.m. ET. All candidates (and their Local Coordinators) will be notified, by email, of the status of their application no later than July 7, 2023. Both streams are limited to 45 participants.
Each member accepted into the Leadership Summit will be funded locally for salary and travel (local expense policy compliance will be required.) Meals and accommodation, from noon on Monday, September 18 through Friday, September 22 at 11:30 a.m. ET, will be funded centrally by ONA.

Novice Stream
The Novice Stream covers the foundations of labour relations and is intended to build Bargaining Unit Presidents’ and executive team members’ knowledge in the following core competency areas:
- The history and structure of ONA in specific relation to services offered.
- ONA’s Communication Pathways.
- Services offered – a specific focus on:
- Grievances
- Health and Safety
- Advocacy in Action 101
- Professional Practice
Application Criteria
Minimum criteria:
- The member currently holds at least one position on the Bargaining Unit Leadership Team.
- The member has a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Local Leadership capacity.
Other requirements:
- The member provides support to the Bargaining Unit President.
- The member demonstrates the following leadership qualities: honesty and integrity, inspires others, commitment and passion, good communication, decision-making capabilities, creativity and innovation.
Advanced Stream
The Advanced Stream will focus on mastering fact-finding and investigations. Members will work through the entire fact-finding and investigation process, including:
- Prescreening complaints and selecting the correct process.
- Planning the investigation using a step-by-step guide.
- Participating in a joint union management investigation process.
- Conducting effective interviews.
- How to handle difficult witnesses.
- Gathering and accessing evidence.
- Writing an investigation report.
Completion of the Advanced Stream will result in a 3-credit training program certificate from Queen’s University IRC.
Application Criteria
Minimum criteria:
- The member has held several positions and currently holds a position on the Bargaining Unit Leadership Team.
- The member has a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Local Leadership capacity.
Other requirements:
- The member provides support to the Bargaining Unit President or Local Coordinator.
- The member has attended the Novice Stream.
- The member demonstrates the following leadership qualities: honesty and integrity, inspires others, commitment and passion, good communication, decision-making capabilities, creativity and innovation.
