On December 3, we recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a time to promote understanding of disability issues and to show support and respect for the well-being and rights of persons with disabilities.
The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution 47/3 in 1992. It aims “to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of on the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.”
This year’s theme is “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” This is a reminder to the global community that it is impossible to advance social development "without the full inclusion, participation and leadership of persons with disabilities."
