TORONTO, ON, June 5, 2023 – The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA), the union representing more than 68,000 nurses and health-care professionals as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates, is delighted to welcome Nurse Practitioners from University Health Network-Princess Margaret Hospital.
The Nurse Practitioners were concerned with a number of issues with their employer, including low wages, a lack of transparency, high turnover rates and not having a voice. They voted overwhelmingly in favour of making ONA their union.
“Our new members are proud of the high-quality care they provide to their patients and ONA is very happy to welcome them,” says ONA Provincial President Erin Ariss, RN. “Our focus now is to provide support and representation to these highly educated Nurse Practitioners and ensure they can focus on the specialized care they are so passionate about providing.”
Initially, University Health Network had challenged the NP’s ability to join ONA but the union fought for their rights; the Ontario Labour Relations Board agreed with ONA’s arguments and ruled in the NPs’ favour.
ONA is the union representing more than 68,000 nurses and health-care professionals, as well as 18,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
