May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

May 5, 2026

May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB.) This day marks the World Health Organization’s (WHO) decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990 — an important step in the fight against homophobia.

The 2026 theme is “At the heart of democracy.” It is a reminder that truly democratic societies must be grounded in justice and freedom for everyone.

While people and organizations in more than 155 countries now celebrate IDAHOTB, discrimination is still tolerated – and even enforced – by governments around the world. In Ontario, we are fortunate to be protected under the Human Rights Code against discrimination and harassment based on one’s sexual orientation.

We are proud to recognize and support the diversity of our members and staff and to be part of the fight against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
