Negotiations Collapse as Nursing Homes Employers Rely on Arbitration Over Fair Deal

TORONTO, ON, April 30, 2026 – Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) front-line nurses were forced to walk away from nursing homes provincial bargaining yesterday because for-profit nursing homes CEOs failed to negotiate a fair deal. Nurses’ main demands include wage parity with hospital nurses and safe working conditions.

TORONTO, ON, April 16, 2026 – Today, members of the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) staged a protest at Extendicare’s Annual Shareholders Meeting in Toronto to demand the nursing homes chain put better resident care before increased profit. At this meeting, shareholders voted to elect new board members and appoint a new board chair who has a background in private equity and real estate, not front-line care. This makes nurses and health-care professionals question the priorities of Extendicare’s board – resident care or more profits.

TORONTO, ON, March 23, 2026 – Today, dozens of nurses and health-care professionals, members of the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA), staged a protest at the Ontario Long Term Care Association (OLTCA) Annual General Meeting in Toronto. In April, more than 4,400 ONA nursing homes members will negotiate a new collective agreement with their employers. They are demanding an end to corporate profits and a reinvestment of monies into staffing ratios, fair wages and better resident care.
